WEATHER Nice, warm, definitely beach weather.
Rachel looked around in her apartment with a proud smile on her face, holding the last and now empty box in her arms. She had moved out of her mother’s new house a few months ago and had finally found some spare time to unpack the last box and find a place to the rest of her stuff and now she could finally call this her home. Sure nothing would ever beat the home she once had in Kentucky, the one that had been broken by her deceased stepdad, but she would just have to make this place into the home she wanted it to be. She looked around at the pictures she had set up – the last items that had been in the box and smiled to herself; pictures always helped making places more homely.
There were many different pictures of smiling people from her past, all people she still cared deeply about, but there was one picture standing on the television in the small living room that kept drawing her eyes to it; it was the sonogram picture of her dead unborn child and she smiled brightly, “This is ma new home and ma new chance of a better start. Am gonna make this work, make maybe who knows, find a guy here that will replace tha hole in ma heart that you and ya daddy left me with.” She said and took the picture on the tv. “Am not ashamed of ya, but it’s time to let go of the past and would could’a been.” She said and placed the empty box on the floor. “Sorry.” She said and walked into her bedroom – the only other room other than the kitchen – and placed it in a small shrine under the bed.
It surprised her how could it felt to lock the picture of her sad secret up for good and she stood up and took a big and somewhat relieved breath. Sure she wouldn’t be able to find a guy in the nearest future, but that didn’t bother her much. She had her new school to worry about, her job, her friends and most importantly; The Circle. She had transferred from Kentucky’s Circle department to the one in L.A. and they had all been open and warm to her, understanding where she came from and she felt the support they had all come with, by not talking to her about the past, but just treated her like an equal and that was all plus some, than she had ever dared hoping for as she had moved to this place.
The fact that Ryan O’Connor – her mom’s fiancé and one of the department’s superiors – had been there and help her start, might also had have a part of why people had been so open to let her prove herself as their co-worker and she was grateful to that. God had really been good to her and looked after her in these hard times she had just gone through and had kept her strong throughout the whole thing.
Walking into the living room Rachel picked up the empty box and smiled, she felt like going out and look around the place with new and positive eyes, taking in the place that God had brought her to and maybe meet some of her old friends and maybe find a couple of new ones. Friends were always good and there was always room for new ones, at least in her mind they were.
Grabbing a hold of her cowboy jacket and putting on some sneakers, Rachel left her apartment, locking it with the box in her arms as she was going to throw it out in the dumpster on her way out. She walked down the stairs, smiling and greeting people she met on the way down and jumped the last 5 steps, it may have looked silly, but for some reason it made her feel good and she wasn’t one to care about what other people thought, as long as she enjoyed it.
Having dumped her empty box, the redheaded girl went off into the place that was known as ‘University Hills’ and whistled joyfully, noticing people that walked past her, remembering their faces and scents – an old habit she had obtained as a spy for the circle. Where was she going to go? What was she going to do? She hadn’t thought this far, but she had confidence in something or someone finding her.
